Description

Description/Taste

Envy apples are a round variety with striated, ruby red skin with green undertones. They have a crisp, sweet white flesh that will stay pure white for up to 10 hours before succumbing to oxidation and turning brown. Envy apples have what are known as lenticels, or small pores, which allow gases to pass between the skin and the flesh of a fruit. The lenticels appear as specks on the Envy apple; the more specks, the sweeter the apple.

Seasons/Availability

Envy apples are available almost year-round from sources in New Zealand, Chile, and the United States.

Current Facts

The large Envy™ apple (species Malus domestica) is a recent New Zealand cross between the Braeburn and Royal Gala apple, developed and marketed by the Oppenheimer Group. It has the same parentage as the Jazz apple, from the same producer.

Nutritional Value

Apples are a nutritious snack or meal ingredient because they contain several important nutrients in a low-calorie package. One medium apple has less than 100 calories, along with 17% of the daily recommended value of dietary fiber and 14% of the daily recommended value of Vitamin C. Apples also contain small amounts of quercetin, boron, and Vitamin B.

Applications

The sweet taste and crunch of an Envy apple makes it perfect for fresh out-of-hand eating. The flavor also lends well to cakes and pies. Dice Envy apples and mix with goat cheese to stuff chicken or pork. Add bite-sized pieces of Envy apples to chicken salads or a classic Waldorf. Because this New Zealand hybrid doesn’t brown as quickly as other apple varieties, it makes a great sliced snack.

Ethnic/Cultural Info

Envy apples are grown using what is known as the Integrated Fruit Production (IFP) method, which takes environmental concerns into account during apple growing. New Zealand introduced this way of growing apples in 1996, which involves the selective application of pesticides and fungicides based on need. About 90% of New Zealand’s apples are grown using IFP.

Geography/History

Envy apples are grown in several places worldwide. They were developed for New Zealand’s climate, and continue to be grown in Hawke’s Bay on the North Island and in Nelson on the South Island. They are also grown in Chile and in Washington state in the US. Oppenheimer group, which also developed the Jazz apple, developed this apple over a span of twenty-five years; the first cross of this apple was made in 1985. Envy is proving to be a popular variety— sales doubled in volume between 2014 and 2015.
